Visit the blog again next week to read about part time work experiences in community and hospital pharmacies! Malaysia Exchange 1- Elaine My exchange in Malaysia was amazing. The most exciting and unforgettable semester I had. Where can I possibly start to express how much I enjoyed it? In the beginning, I was a tight ball of stress coming into a country new to me and was worried about surviving on my own for five months for the first time. However, upon meeting other exchange students, I became optimistic that I would have a great time in Malaysia. And I honestly did. I have made many local friends including fellow Pharmacy students, members of the rock-climbing Club, the Athletics club and fellow participants in the Monash Cup (sports festival). They are all so friendly and considerate, welcoming and warm, and they helped a lot in making my exchange easier and so much more wonderful and fun. I appreciate all their help in teaching me their languages, explaining their cultures to me, taking me out to eat many tasty and delicious local food and allowing me to join in on their fun activities. I have become close friends with some and we have kept in touch till this day. I am grateful for their presence and support during the handful of stressful moments that comes with uni, exams and a new country. During my time there, I have snorkelled in the beautiful transparent waters of Perhentian Islands, shopped for souvenirs at Melaka, visited the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur and ate Bak Kut Teh (pork rib soup) famous in Klang twice; I also hiked with wild dogs, climbed at Boulder Ventures centre and even participated in an outdoor climbing competition, to name a few. I spent most of my time enjoying what the campus had to offer, integrating well into the Monash Sunway community. The fortnightly bazaars were bountiful with various unique merchandise, physical training with the rock-climbing club were intense but satisfying; the music, dance and performing art shows were fantastic and inspiring! Training for and participating in Monash Cup was insanely fun – and collecting a few medals myself did not hurt! The fondest memories I have are the times I spent eating with and getting to know more about my new friends and talking about our eventful days. If I could go again I would like to spend more time exploring nearby attractions. It was an incredible experience, and I will visit Malaysia again one day. I recommend everyone to go on exchange, it's so worth it - Elaine Sharing the exchange experience in Malaysia with friends from other parts of the world Outdoor Rock-Climbing Competition with the Monash University Climbing Club at Batu Caves Group warm-up before the Pharmacy Dodgeball game – spot us Monash Abroad students in red! Malaysia Exchange 2- Chelsea
Exchange was a one in a lifetime opportunity to embrace myself in a totally different country and live like a local. It was full of ups and downs but overall probably the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. I was joining different clubs at uni, travelling to surrounding countries every weekend, partying almost every week night, trying unique dishes I would never had the chance to try and making life long friends from all over the world. The memories and experiences I gained are priceless and I highly recommend everyone to take the leap and study abroad. Chelsea Chau Part-time work (Compounding pharmacy) Hi my name is Natalia and I have the pleasure to work in a compounding pharmacy. I am excited to briefly talk to you about it. Let’s just say that is the best of chemistry and pharmacy which are the two things that I am passionate about. Compounding pharmacy focusses on the art and science of preparing specially customized medications for patients. This is great because sometimes some patients are not able to take premade pharmaceutical preparations due to a variety of reasons such as allergies or swallowing difficulties just to name a few. It has deep history roots as its practice can be found back to the origins of pharmacy. However, compounding’s existence in the pharmacy profession has changed over the years. It is truly a rewarding part of pharmacy because you are striving to make a patient tailored compounded prescription. Everyday you are making something new such as capsules to creams and sometimes I compound medications for our four-legged furry friends. I find this incredibly rewarding and the best part is when your customers come in and appreciate what you have made for them. In the end you are helping them find a solution to their health needs which is the true reason of why I enjoy working in a compounding pharmacy.
